Cincinnati Enquirer, April 21:
Letter-to-the-editor from Harold Brown, associate director for
multicultural enrollment, notes that a recent story on the need to
encourage Hispanics to attend college neglected to mention Miami's
progress in this area.   At Miami, 1.6 percent of students are
Hispanic, compared to 1 percent at most other area colleges and
universities.  In addition, applications are up 16 percent this year.

Hamilton Journal News April 21
Econet, a group of Miami U. students, will celebrate Earth Day 11
a.m.-4 p.m. at Oxford College on April 29.  Quotes students Whitney
Long and Lisa Keeney, who are trying to collect 2,000 hours of
volunteer work to improve the environment.

A pact with Miami University Hamilton will allow 20 city of Hamilton
employees to learn conversational Spanish, to help them work with the
city's growing Hispanic population.

AT&T has formed an Education Alliance with five universities,
including Miami, the company announced Thursday.  AT&T gave each
school $250,000 and is supporting them with "knowledge networking"
forms, internships and more.  The initiative kicks off with a
videoconference with AT&T's president of business services, April 26,
viewable at Miami's Laws Hall.  The alliance will allow the five
schools to share what they are best at, said Daniel Short, dean of
Miami's Richard T. Farmer School of Business.

Op-ed by James Brock (economics) says through the messy Justice Dept.
lawsuit against Microsoft, the "heart and soul of antitrust policy"
eluded attention, but the outcome confirms the soundness of American
antitrust policy's distrust of power and its abuse.

Dayton Daily News April 21
Op-ed by Reo Christenson, professor emeritus of Miami and a member of
the paper's community board of contributors, suggests that in
addition to honoring Dayton's top students, perhaps those who have
less support and therefore may not make valedictorian, can
nonetheless be among those honored for "greatest academic
improvement."

Middletown Journal, April 20
Mary Lu Flynn, Miami University Middletown's director of enrollment
services, received the ATHENA award at the Women in Networking
Conference.  The award goes to individuals who have achieved
excellence in their business or profession, have served the community
in a meaningful way and have assisted women in reaching leadership
potential.
and
Phillip Shriver, president emeritus, will present Miami Middletown's
annual Casper Lecture  Tuesday, on "If This Were My Last Lecture."
