Okay, how about a little conversation... (controversy???)
First of all, I am excited that the guys finally jumped into this century
with a little preview over the web. I am also excited that the new album
(does the term "album" exist anymore?) is just around the corner. Big
congrats to whomever twisted their arms to get a new song online. The
distribution method is a little quirky, but I'll live with it to hear new
Connells.
Now for the controversy. I have listened to this song about ten times.
While it is okay, I cannot imagine it making the cut on B-H, F&G, or Ring.
It is missing a strong "hook" and it repeats lyric phrases too often. I am
worried of another disappointing album like Still Life and Weird Food. Not
to give the impression that I didn't like SL and WF, I did. But, I didn't
LOVE them as all the earlier albums. Listen to Rusted Fields and then
listen to any song on F&G. Granted, F&G was a different musical period for
them, but even taking that it account, every song on F&G is brilliant.
Rusted Fields is borderline ho hum.
I have been desperately hoping that the guys might reach deep into their
souls (especially Mike) just one more time and put together another
masterpiece album like the three I mentioned above, but Rusted Fields may
signal that this one will not be the one. Anyone else agree? Disagree? Am
I being too critical of my favorite group? I REALLY do want this band to be
successful again and regain deserved recognition.
Scott
