Cincinnati Enquirer, Nov. 3: Article on crime at local campuses says
that students are more likely to have their book bags stolen than to
be assaulted.  Discusses complexities of Right to Know Act and notes
that interpretations of what off-campus statistics to include in that
federally mandated report range from Miami's inclusion of crime
statistics from throughout the City of Oxford to University of
Cincinnati's use of only sidewalks, streets and parks actually
bordering its campus.  Quotes Cathryn House, Miami chief of police.
And
Article on upcoming local theater season and a growing trend toward
diversity provides some examples that the writer considers high
points, including performances at Miami scheduled for April 6-8 of
Naga Mandala (Play with a Cobra).
And
Bob Dylan concert at Miami Nov. 4.

Cincinnati Post, Nov. 2: T.J. Meloy, a student at Mount Healthy High
School, is blind, but that doesn't prevent him and his guidedog
Auggie from participating in marching band performances.  T.J. will
be attending Miami after graduation, but hasn't decided whether he
will try out for Miami's band.

Op-ed by Allan Winkler (history and American studies) says that
modern forms of media have contributed to the fragmentation of our
democracy and the willingness of citizens to participate in civic
affairs.

Journal-News, Nov. 3: Editorial congratulates a Miami/Oxford
coalition for receiving a federal grant of about $100,000 to promote
healthy choices when it comes to drinking, drugs and tobacco.
Editorial says President Garland has been "front and center" in his
efforts to counter problem drinking by students.

Elliott Mannette will speak at 11 a.m. Thursday in Souers Recital
Hall as part of the State of Music at the Millennium series.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet will perform Dracula at 7:30 p.m. Thursday
in Millett Hall as part of Miami's Performing Arts Family Series.
Dianne Sadoff (English) will give a free pre-performance lecture at
Millett  (two stories, one in entertainment section, one in news
briefs).

Feature on Millennium Messages exhibition at the Miami University Art Museum.
And
Feature on an exhibition at the Miami University Art Museum by
Cincinnati painter Jack Meanwell.
And
The Harmonettes, Women's Barbershop Chorus of Greater Hamilton, will
perform at Parrish Auditorium, MU Hamilton, Nov. 4 and 5.

Campus: America's Student Magazine, fall winter/2000: Article on
trend for colleges and universities to retire their native American
mascots notes that Miami, Dartmouth, Stanford and Syracuse have
"buckled under the pressure" of protests from the American Indian
Movement and other groups and that University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign is in the midst of such a debate.
