To find some nineteenth century British temperance journals you can
visit the Livesey Library Catalogue of the University of Central
Lancashire, Preston, England, at www.uclan.ac.uk .Click on Library
Online, then Library catalogue, then check keyword or title entries but
make sure you select "Joseph Livesey" in the drop down menu.

'National' distribution needs thinking about: in the 19th century there
were four nations in the UK: England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland (all
32 counties until 1921). Do you mean distribution in England or Great
Britain (the largest island) or the UK? Even 'national' English journals
tended to be distributed, by railways, within a radius of, say, 100
miles or so of either London [the base of the UK Alliance] or the
Northern industrial cities, such as Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and
Leeds: the League [based in Sheffield, Yorkshire] tended to be most
active in the North. Scotland, Wales and Ireland had their own
organisations and publications (you could try checking the web
catalogues of the National Libraries of Scotland and Wales and Trinity
College, Dublin).

In Wales, remember, the Welsh language was widely used as the first
language of many people in the nonconformist / temperance culture so
Welsh language journals will have been distributed 'nationally' but
largely within Wales. Welsh, by the way, is still thriving in parts of
the country, as a look at www.eisteddfod.org will confirm.

Hello ATHG,

There were quite a few Temperance periodicals in the 19th century in
America and Great Britain, but I'm sure many of them were mainly
distributed locally. Do you know which periodicals were distributed
nationally? I would appreciate any information you could provide.

Sincerely,

Lisa Hinton
