NATURALIST PROGRAMS
W E E K D A Y S
AT HUESTON WOODS STATE PARK
JUNE 2005

WEDNESDAYS
11AM Discover Cedar Falls Trail-Be sure not to miss a hike in this
picturesque part of the park.  Meet at the back of the Sycamore Grove
Parking Area.
        1PM Hawk Talk-Meet at the Class A Campground’s Center Circle to meet some
of these winged predators.
        3PM Junior Naturalist Session I-Animal Adaptations! For ages 7-14.  Meet in
the Lodge’s Front Lobby.
5PM Vulture Culture-Are you curious to learn about the big black birds that
call the Lodge roof their hangout?  Meet some of these homely, yet
handsomely intelligent and social members of the animal kingdom.  Meet in
the Lodge’s Front Lobby.
7PM Beavers and Birchbark-Come to the Nature Center to learn all about North
America’s largest rodent.  Follow with a trip by canoe to view an active
beaver lodge (water level permitting). There is a $6+tax charge per canoe.
Sign up for the trip begins at the Marina at 8AM Wednesday morning.

THURSDAYS
11AM Journey in the Big Woods-Meet a Naturalist at the Nature Center to
caravan to the Nature Preserve for a hike.  Learn history of the area and
why it is so important to the park.
2PM Sharp Beaks and Talons Join the naturalist at the Nature Center to meet
our birds of prey.  Learn about their natural history, role in the food
chain, and more.
        3PM Junior Naturalist Session II-Topics for young nature lovers, ages 7-14.
Meet at the Nature Center.
4PM Lore of the Forest Floor-Plants don’t have fur or feathers or feet, but
they still have survival strategies and stories to be told.  Meet at Class A
Campground’s Center Circle for a hike in the green kingdom.
5PM Naturalists in the Campground-Campers, look for a visit from the
Naturalists and a creature friend.  Ask questions or get a schedule of
upcoming nature programs during your stay in the park.
8PM Owls of Ohio-Come to the Front Lobby of the Lodge to learn about these
winged creatures of the night.  Meet some up close!
9PM Owl Prowl-Bring your stealthy selves to the Front Lobby of the Lodge.
We will then caravan to a trail near the cabins for a hike to call these
nocturnal hunters. Insect repellent and proper footwear suggested. Please no
pets.

FRIDAYS
9AM Hike for Health- Join a Naturalist at the Nature Center for a hike along
the American Discovery Trail.  We may hike up to 3 miles, depending on the
enthusiasm of the group.  Hiking shoes and water bottle suggested.
11AM Cats With Wings-Come to the Nature Center to find out some similarities
between the feathered and the furred.
        2PM Snake Tails-Come to the Nature Center for a close up look at Ohio’s
cold blooded finest.
3PM Junior Naturalist Session III-Various topics for nature lovers ages
7-14.  Meet at the Nature Center.
4PM Hooves and Hairs- Meet at the Nature Center for a trip to the deer pen.
Learn about their natural history, and get a chance to feed them a snack.
5PM Naturalists in the Campground- Campers, look for a visit from the
Naturalists and a creature friend.  Ask questions or get a schedule of
upcoming nature programs during your stay in the park.
6PM Cruising Acton Lake-Join the naturalists at the Marina for a pontoon
cruise.  Learn about the history of Hueston Woods and view some Acton Lake
wildlife.  Seats are limited.  Sign up begins at the Marina at 8 a.m. Friday
morning.
8:30PM Tales from the Trails by the Fire-Join a Naturalist at the campfire
ring in Class A campground near the Indian Mound.  Mingle with fellow
campers, share stories and ask questions.
9:30 Night Hike-Explore a trail under the cover of darkness.  Meet at the
Indian Mound Trailhead after the campfire for a night time adventure.
Insect repellent and proper footwear suggested. Please no pets.

All children must be accompanied by an adult to attend programs.
Notify a naturalist if special accommodations may be needed for your
participation.

W E E K E N D S
AT HUESTON WOODS STATE PARK
JUNE 2005

SATURDAYS
        9AM Birds and Blooms-Meet at the Sycamore Grove parking lot to see what’s
flying and flowering in the park.
11AM Wildlife Invasion at the Lodge- The naturalist will be in the Lodge’s
Front Lobby with a few wild friends.
1PM Tigers of the Sky- Join the naturalist at the Nature Center to meet our
birds of prey.  Learn about their natural history, role in the food chain,
and more.
        2PM Creekin-Meet at the Nature Center with old shoes, and prepare to get
wet.
        3PM Wildcat Chat-Come to the Nature Center to observe these powerful
predators at feeding time.
        4PM Eco Art-Meet a naturalist in the Class A Campground’s Center Circle to
create some nature art.
6PM Family Fishing Fun- Meet the naturalist at the Marina to try your hand
at pulling up some of Acton Lake’s ample fish.  Bait and poles provided, but
come early because supplies are limited.
8PM Sunset Canoe Adventure- Join the naturalist for an exploration of Acton
lake wildlife.  There is a $6+tax charge per canoe for this program.  Meet
at the Marina and come early, canoes are limited.
        9PM Family Night at the Movies-Bring the family to an outdoor movie at the
Class A Campground’s Center Circle.

SUNDAYS
        11AM Fossil Expedition- Meet at the Fossil Collection Area by the dam and
bring a small bag for your treasures.
1PM Reptile Repast-Meet at the Nature Center for a reptile show.  Stick
around to observe these creatures partake of their Sunday dinner.
4PM Furs and Feet-Bring your feet to the Nature Center to learn about some
of the animals that call Hueston Woods their territory.  Get an up close
look at furs and skulls, learn about tracking, and take home a plaster track
of your own.  Target ages 5 to 105.
        7PM Ohio’s Old Growth-Meet at the Blue Heron Parking Lot to see what Ohio’s
forest looked like years ago.

Gardening for Wildlife-Want to turn that boring grass into a haven for
wildlife?  Come to the Nature Center to find out how to attract desirable
creatures to your backyard and give them a helping hand.

feet.  Learn to walk like the animals in our tracking pit, and make your
very own plaster track to take home with you.

Naturalists in the Campground-

1PM Predators and Prey-Come to the Nature Center to meet some of Ohio’s
native wildlife.  Learn hunting strategies of some of our raptors and cats,
followed by a short trip to the deer pen to see the other side of the story.

All children must be accompanied by an adult to attend programs.
 Notify the naturalist if special accommodations may be needed for your
participation.  All programs subject to change.
