My dear friends:
It is with deep gratitude and humility that I thank you for the
reception commemorating my 15 years as director of black world studies.
While my heart if filled, my soul celebrates having you as friends, and
companions on this walk through life. As I mumbled this evening, it is
you that deserve the applause, for black world studies is you. I have
only attempted to mirror your vision, desires, and hopes for an
academically rigorous, scholarly sound, and intellectually challenging
program of study. To the extent that it has been realized, you made it
possible. And so, I salute you and thank you for the memories. And
now, before someone ask, no I am not retiring. I am just stepping aside
for fresh ideas, momentum, and direction. I will continue, now as a
senior statesmen, and do what I can to help the program continue in its
path of excellence.
with much love and respect
