Dear colleagues,

The African American Mental Health Research Scientist (AAMHRS)
Consortium is
pleased to announce the opportunity for 10 mental health research
scientists and 10 mentors to participate in a one-year grant-mentoring
program beginning March 30, 2006. The AAMHRS Consortium represents a
national effort on the part of experienced and committed social,
behavioral, clinical, prevention/intervention, and medical mental health
research scientists to: (1) increase the numbers of competitive grant
applications African American research scientists submit to the NIMH;
and (2) build a supportive research network for emerging African
American mental health scientists.

Mentee applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents, African
American, and have completed all requirements for the doctorate (e.g.,
Ph.D., DSW, M.D.) including the final dissertation defense (if
appropriate)
by the time of appointment to the program (December 15, 2005).
Mentees
must demonstrate a clear interest and commitment to mental health
research in
their applications. Please examine the NIMH Web site
(http://www.nimh.nih.gov) for a complete description of NIMH's current
extramural programs, grant mechanisms, and research priorities.
African
American research scientists who have not received an independent NIMH
or NIH grant (e.g., R01, R24), and who require additional skills in
grant-writing or specific areas of research involving underserved
populations are eligible for this program. Mentees are required to
attend a
3-day grant workshop to be held in Bethesda, Maryland, March 30-April
1, 2006, work closely with their mentor in preparing a competitive
grant
application, and submit a grant application to NIMH within 18-months
of
acceptance into the program. Mentees will be matched with mentors
according to comparability in theoretical, methodological, and
substantive
interests.

Resources for mentees include travel funds to attend the grant
workshop
and to meet with their mentors throughout the year.

Mentor applicants must be experienced NIMH- or NIH-funded scientists
who
are willing to share their conceptual, methodological, and
grant-writing
expertise in acquiring and maintaining funding. All experienced NIMH-
or NIH-funded research scientists are encouraged to apply to be mentors
and
to contribute to this important effort. Mentors who are selected for
the
2006 program are expected to attend the 3-day grant workshop.
Resources for
mentors include travel funds to attend the workshop as well as a
stipend
for their work with mentees.

Although only 10 mentors will be selected and matched with mentees for
the 2006 program, they are working to create a network of experienced
mentors
who can contribute to future AAMHRS Consortium and NIMH initiatives.
They
urge successful NIMH or NIH grantees to be a part of this developing
network for mentoring minority scientists and those who are interested
in
and committed to high-quality research on mental health and
underserved
populations.

Mentee and mentor applications for the 2006 Research Scientists:
Grant-Mentoring Program must be submitted via the Web site
http://guam.pop.psu.edu/aamhrs/ by November 1, 2005. All applicants
will be notified of their standing by December 15, 2005. If you have
questions
concerning the eligibility criteria for mentees or mentors, please
contact the current AAMHRS Consortium Co-chairs, Linda Burton
([log in to unmask]) or Harold Neighbors ([log in to unmask]). If you have
any questions about submitting your applications via the Web site,
please contact Sharon Childs
([log in to unmask]).
