Howdy All,
In addition to the three Surf Scoters seen on the Cincinnati Bird Club
field trip this morning and reported on Ohio Birds by Larry Gara, we found
a White-winged Scoter (WWSC). The bird was first seen from the north boat
ramp east of the beach off of Rt 73. When we first saw the WWSC, there
was still lots of cloud cover, and the WWSC looked all dark, but the white
speculum was quite visible in flight and was visible while the bird was
sitting on the water. Later, we saw apparently the same White-winged
Scoter from Harveysburg Road. This time we could see the two white areas
on the face and the bird looked lighter in color than during the previous
observation. However, this was probably due to the much brighter
conditions. While we were at the end Harveysburg Road, the cloud cover
cleared, and we had bright sunshine. However, just in case, anyone going
to Caesar Creek to look for the WWSC should look carefully to see if there
are two WWSC there, one quite dark and the other with the two white areas
on the face that we saw later. We looked for a second bird while at
Harveysburg Road and did not find a second WWSC. Incidentally, the three
Surf Scoters were still at the eastern edge of the beach area water at
about 4:30 - 5:00 pm today. A complete list of the bird seen today at
Caesar Creek SP will be posted on http://cincinnatibirds.com.
