Hi all -

Taking up on Gabe Leidy's lead to his finding another LeConte's at the
Richfield Coliseum grasslands this morning, my dad and I treaded the entire
patch of grasslands this afternoon from 1:30 pm - 4 pm. We succeeded in
finding one LECONTE'S out towards the middle of the grasslands, in a larger
section of wet lowland immediately adjacent to the 'fenced' area. There are
several stakes that mark rather large holes in the ground, so as much as
you'd like to walk with your head up, scanning, be sure not to drop into one
of these pits. That would be horrid.

The entire area is ridiculously good, habitat-wise, with dozens of small wet
'potholes' surrounded by cattails, sedges, and prairie grasses. My dad said
it best by stating 'it's wet.....um...everywhere'. I'm so very happy to see
that this location has been saved.

We had a several extraordinarily-tantalizing looks at what we believe was
perhaps a second LeConte's...but as goes, we'll leave this one as a
'goshdarnit' bird. Rain, blustering wind, and dark skies didn't really help
our hunt.

We had at least 3 solid looks at the LeConte's and we're very fortunate to
have actually tracked down this virtual needle in a haystack.

Here's what we picked up:

Wilson's Snipe - 13
American Kestrel - 2
Song Sparrow - 30
Swamp Sparrow - 15
Savannah Sparrow - 20
Vesper Sparrow - 4
Field Sparrow - 1
Palm Warbler - 1
Eastern Meadowlark - 30+

cheers
