Apparently this post got rejected because despite multiple efforts to
register my hotmail account, the listserv still, still, STILL won't
accept posts from it. Anyway, here it is, with apologies for the
lateness:
Excellent birding at Lakewood Park Saturday afternoon. Dozens of Common
loons
and Horned grebes within ready scope range, thousands of Red-breasted
mergansers, and a solitary Chimney swift working the bluffs.
About 1 p.m. a Parasitic jaeger (possibly a subadult light-morph, since
it
showed a very light strip at the base of the tail) showed up and
attacked
the HELL out of a Ring-billed gull, with a series of skirmishes lasting
about three minutes. At one point the gull had been forced down to the
water and the jaeger was practically standing on the gull's head.
Eventually the score was gull - one meal lost, jaeger - one meal gained,
and
the jaeger disappeared eastward.
Good birding.
