Greetings-----fabulous day at Conneaut yesterday 11/12. Couldn't post until the library opened this morning. Highlights: 2 female long-tailed ducks (still there this morning), red-necked grebe (also remains), 5 black-crowned night-herons, ad. bald eagle, greater yellowlegs, dunlins (only 10 left), sanderling (on Saturday for 5 minutes), imm. laughing gull, ad. CALIFORNIA GULL, imm. lesser black-backed gull, imm. glaucous gull, horned larks, Am. pipits, hermit thrush, snow buntings. Plus numerous waterbirds of the expected variety. All of these seen at point-blank range at times. My kingdom for a camera! Keep in mind, I spent about 8 hours at the harbor yesterday. A half-hour visit won't get you all these birds. Actually, I spent 7 days here at the Conneaut-Ashtabula lakefront. Many hours each day looking, looking, looking (as Joe Tait would say). Now I know how the Klamm's, LePage, Hannikman, Pogasznick (sorry if I butchered the spelling, John), Rosche,
Talkington, etc. have found so many goodies along L.Erie. If you go to Conneaut, be aware of waterfowl hunters. Saturday, two very reckless hunters were right on the sandbar (which is well-known to be a no-hunting area). I advised them they were breaking the law, you have to be out on the outer breakwall or out in a boat to legally hunt there. Eventually, from 150+ feet away my car and I got showered with shotgun pellets intended for a goose. I reported this to the police, who didn't bother to go talk to them. When they were leaving, I went and had a very unpleasant "conversation" with one of them. He was about ready to throw punches, luckily I was safely locked up in my car by then. So I went back to the police station to file a report. The other hunting parties there that day were following the rules, I even talked with a couple gentlemen to see what they bagged.
