We birded briefly along Lake Erie today, Nov. 16, and stopped to check
out the Gordon Park boat basin at about 2 PM where we had very good
looks at a winter plumaged Red-necked Grebe. The bird was resting on the
water near the Dike 14 wall in company with Mallards and a male Lesser
Scaup for size comparison. On our way home we cut through Lake View
Cemetery and were happy to find a Merlin perched in the top of a tall
tree in the vicinity of Wade Chapel and the ponds. For at least the past
two winters Merlins have spent the entire season in Lake View; maybe
this one will also hang around.
