The Red-throated Loon (RTLO) found on Friday, 11/17/06 by Larry Gara and
Rick Asamoto was still present this morning and seen from Furnas Boat
Ramp. I arrived at first light at about 6;30 am and found the RTLO with
three Common Loons southeast of the boat ramp. The four loons gradually
worked their way right/north past the island and then started diving along
the far shore. At about 7:15 am. I left to check out the beach, but found
only 1 Common Loon, 2 Horned Grebes, about 45 American Coots, 2
Ring-billed Gulls and 3 Killdeer. I returned to Furnas Boat Ramp, which
is accessed across Rt 73 from the entry to the beach. There I met Andy
Bess from Cincinnati, and we went across the lake to the lodge and hiked
down to the lake. We saw one Common Loon from there, and then walked back
up the old road. We could not see all the loons from the far shore in the
vicinity of the lodge, because they were mostly hidden by a rounded point
of land to the south east of our position. We couldn't work our way
southeast, because there was youth hunting in that area today. Andy and I
returned to Furnas Boat Ramp and were soon joined by Jeff Brown, Mike
Busam, Larry Gara and Rick Asamoto. We found the Red-throated Loon rather
far out at first, but got better looks as it worked north and then east to
get closer to Furnas Boat Ramp. I took some long-distance digiscoped
photos. As we watched the loon a female Surf Scoter landed in front of
us, closer than the loon and gave everyone great looks. Everyone went to
Harveysburg Road, where we found 3 Bufflehead, 1 Horned Grebe, 1 close
Common Loon, and about 5 very distant Common Loons on the northeast end of
the lake. Otherwise, not much action at Caesar Creek this morning.
