This morning I checked Hoover Reservoir for waterfowl. The birds are just
not there. At Oxbow Road we located Pied-billed Grebes (10), Horned Grebe (1),
Ruddy Duck (3), Hooded Merganser (100+), and Bonaparte's Gull (100+) but
nothing else.

We then followed the west shore south to the dam. Other than more
Bonaparte's Gulls and some Hooded Mergansers near the far shore there was little to
show for the drive. Then we followed the east shore north and other than
Mallards and Canada Geese we had nothing to report.

In the Galena area we walked Wiese Road and checked the cove at Dustin Road.
Here we found low numbers of Hooded Mergansers and several large groups of
Double-crested Cormorants. At Wiese Road we observed 2 Hermit Thrushes and a
single Fox Sparrow which were a nice surprise. There were also many
Yellow-rumped Warblers, White-throated Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos.

Hopefully things will pick up between now and the December Christmas Bird
Counts. Empty water isn't very exciting.
