Hello Ohio Birders,

A small contingent of Columbus Audubon birders braved wind and cold showers to visit Deer Creek Lake this afternoon. We did see the northern shrike, perched in a treetop about 1/2 mile east of the beach area parking lot. It was not visible from any of the open roads in the area; we parked by the gate (but not blocking it) and walked in. There was a white pelican at the north end of the lake, visible from the road that parallels Deer Creek in the Wildlife Area, north of Pancoastburg. In addition to these highlights, there were 2 common loons, 4 horned grebes, 6 or 7 hooded mergansers, a few mallards, the usual gaggle of Canada geese, probably 30 great blue herons, scores of bonaparte's gulls, and not much else of note. We usually get sandhill cranes at Deer Creek on the day after Ohio State beats Michigan, but none this year.

Happy birding,

Dave Horn
