John Watts discovered a red-throated loon on Lake Logan in Hocking Co
mid-day Sat, and he and I observed it there later. Yesterday, it and
possibly another (conditions too poor for definite ID) were present.
Small as it is in the big picture, the number of this species seen this
fall, especially inland, is unusual. Reports of common loons in Ohio
always have outnumbered those of red-throateds by better than 100 to
one. This was the first record for Hocking Co; Peterjohn (2001) notes
"there are very few rcords from unglaciated Ohio."
A report on the Indiana list supplies reason to speculate, if you're in
the mood. At Lake Lemon yesterday, 5500 common loons were estimated,
accompanied by four red-throateds and a Pacific.
