jerry talkington refound the cattle egret along tamarac road in willoughby about mid-morning today. he searched for the ross's goose at u.s grant elementary school but did not find the bird. squally weather at headlands beach state park made for a good waterfowl day with 14 species of ducks. noteworthy were 27 white-winged scoters, 60+ common goldeneyes, and 4 black scoters. 3 flocks of tundra swans( about 85 birds in all) were noted. most impressive, though, was a massive movement of common loons. the morning's count was 778 common loons, my second highest headlands count ever, with over 400 birds from about 9:00 am to 9:30 am after the passage of a particularly squally bit of weather.
