I am continually amazed at how Larry Gara and I can go to the same place on
the same day and see different stuff. I was at the Furnas Shore boat ramp
at 0930 and the Red-throated Loon was there. In fact, it was the only bird
on the water except for a Horned Grebe and two Ring-billed Gulls.

Over at the beach, I found no coot, but I did have an adult female
White-winged Scoter in loose association with three Hooded Mergansers. The
scoter I saw was uniformly dark with two diffuse lighter spots on the head,
one behind and one in front of the eye. The sp[ot behind the eye was larger
and oval shaped. The spot before the eye was smaller, less distinct, and on
a line directly between the eye and the bill, but closer to the bill than to
the eye. The bill was smaller and slenderer than that of Surf Scoter. The
white secondary patch was not visible, though this has more often than not
been the case in my admittedly limited experience with this species.

There were 67 ring-bills on the beach, all but two in third winter/adult
basic plumage. The other two were one first winter and one second winter.
At the Haynes boat ramp on Young Road, there were another 123 ring-bills and
73 Killdeer on the mud newly exposed by the winter drawdown of the lake
level.

Cheers,

Bob
