We've had a plague of starlings in much of Columbus & its suburbs over the past month, but things have become quieter within the last 2-3 days. Yesterday, I happened to stumble upon an enormous evening gathering of them in the heart of Columbus, right near the I-71, I-670 interchange. Scattered around the old brownfields and warehouses were big flocks, some in flight, others perched on sagging power lines. I was commuting home and had little time to stop, but estimated a bit over 30,000 birds. This flock wasn't nearly so big on trips earlier in the week, and was much smaller tonight (although it was very rainy). It had all the hallmarks of a migrant blackbird flock, and occurred right before the big weather change when you might expect migrant movement. Has anyone else noted big flocks of starlings on the move lately?
