Most readers will be familiar with the Checklist of the Birds of Ohio,
from the Ohio Bird Records Committee. This authoritative reference is
around in the thousands in hard copy, and is also on the OOS web site as
a pdf file through a link at
http://www.ohiobirds.org/publications/checklist/checklists.php .
Because it is impossible to update this list several times yearly, we
are now posting an Offical Ohio Bird Checklist that should be current
within days of developments. The OBRC Checklist treats 412; this one, at
http://www.ohiobirds.org/publications/checklist/official.php , has 419.
This is a simple but complete version, in current taxonomic order,
organized by family, with current English and scientific names for all
419. It should be useful for folks developing their own checklists, for
life-list recording, etc., as well as for keeping up to date.
The official checklist is most likely to change as new species are well
documented and accepted by the records committee, and even more often as
the AOU revises and refines the North American list. You will see, for
example some changes in the taxonomic order (the cuckoos' order has been
reversed, jaegers have moved, etc.) as well as a lot of new (actually
most are well over a hundred years old, but newly applied) scientific
names, all changes new this past July. We will keep up with these
developments, and update this on-line list as needed. Please advise if
you find any errors.
