Today's Plain Dealer carried a story in the Metro section on the Sandy Ridge reservation in North Ridgeville. In the opinion of the the Ohio EPA it is a failure. The reason cited was that it was too barren in vegetation. SR joins several other artificially created wetlands in the state that are considered inferior attempts to replace natural wetlands destroyed by development. I am a strong fan of what Lorain Metro parks has created on Otten Rd. I doubt that new wetland such as this will ever duplicate the natural purity of a remote corner of a place like the Ottawa National refuge. The establishment of "artificial wetland of this design is a much welcomed departure from many of the over cultivated and manicured parks being created that attract nothing more exotic than Mallard and Canada goose populations. The birds have voted. More than half of my life list was found at Sandy Ridge.

good sightings to all,
Sam Walker
