The Columbus Audubon trip to Whittier this morning was greeted by cold temperatures, but no fierce wind or hunters. The river level along the Scioto was extremely high from the recent storms, so most of our waterbirds were located in nearby quarries, or later at Pick Ponds by trip member Marcia Howden. The bikepath itself was overrun with flocks of White-throated Sparrows and Cardinals, but only a few other species were located. Highlights included:

Dabbling Ducks - few along the Scioto: mostly Mallards, but with Green-winged Teal (1 at Whittier) and Black Ducks (a few at Berliner Park). Marcia had much better luck at Pick Ponds, which had numbers of Teal, Gadwall, Pintail, and Shovelers.

Diving Ducks - several flocks, with Ring-necks at Hart Rd Quarry (SW of Whittier) and Pick Ponds, and Redhead (6 at the Haul Road quarries). Ruddies were also added at Pick Ponds.

Mergansers - only Hooded were found, but they were widespread, with the motherlode being 30+ birds at the Haul Rd. quarries

Pied-billed Grebes - small numbers (1-3) at every stop, so they were also widespread

Raptors - none, which was quite surprising

Gulls - steady stream flying along river, almost all of which were Ring-bills; Haul Road quarries had a flock of 80-90, as well as Herring Gull.

Wrens, Creepers - good numbers of Carolina Wrens along bikepath at Whittier (4-5) and Berliner (3+), as well as a Winter Wren pushed up along the bikepath at Berliner by flooding in the riparian forest. Brown creepers were also conspicuous at both spots.

Sparrows - LOTS of White-throats along the bikepath at Whittier, where a great crop of honeysuckle will probably keep them for months. Joining them were a few Juncos, Song Sparrows, and 1 Fox sparrow. It was sunny enough this morning that we had White-throats singing at several locations. Marcia later added White-crowns at Pick Ponds.
