If you are using a Windows-based PC and want to keep a database of your
sightings, there are several choices:

AviSys is popular and pretty straightforward; see www.avisys.net. As
AviSys will run on older PCs pretty well, so is a good choice if your
computer is more than a few years old.

Wildlife Recorder is my own favorite for several reasons; see
http://home.surewest.net/bruwebb/WildlifeRecorder.htm. One of the
coolest features is voice entry for sightings -- it's fun and efficient,
but does require a reasonably up-to-date PC (any Windows XP system
should be fine).

Birder's Diary also is available, but I know less about the newer
version; see http://www.birdersdiary.com/

If you have a Mac, your choices are limited. Maybe other listers out
there know of currently-available Mac software?

Finally, if you want to keep minimal records, you can use the Cornell
e-birds Web site.

I reviewed the above programs for Birding magazine a few years ago.
Some of my observations are out of date, but I would be happy to share
my impressions and experiences (as well as what I've learned since
then). Anyone interested should feel free to contact me directly.
