Howdy All,
An early morning visit to the settling basin on McKelvey Ave (Forrest
Park) produced the following waterfowl:
Canada Goose 28
Gadwall 18
Mallard 6
Northern Shoveler 6 (1 male in breeding plumage (BP), 1 male
changing to BP, 4 females)
RIng-necked Duck 5
Hooded Merganser 2 (1 male, 1 female)
American Coot 60
I was seeking the Northern Shovelers, and they were not visible at first,
but swam out from the bank on the right (north) side of basin near the
northwest corner. There was a thin skin of ice this morning, but with
enough open water to keep these birds at thjis location. However, with
the arrival of cold weather and if the ice cover increases and gets
thicker, these birds may move from this location. Shoveler brings my
January list for Ohio to 85.
Jay
