I had the opportunity to take a group from Greene County Parks to Big Island and Killdeer Plains, Saturday. We stopped at Big Island first and I am glad we did.

Bald Eagles seemed to be everywhere. We had a total of 22 birds - juv. and adult between the two sites. Big Island had four adults switching back and forth between sitting on the ice eating fish and sitting in a dead snag. We found two more adults across the road sitting in some corn stubble. Then two more - one juv. and one adult just before you head north to Killdeer.

We found the one and only owl for the day sitting in a field across the street from the main body of water at Big Island. It was a short-eared owl. We saw him about 11 in the morning.

Big Island also had -

Northern Harriers

Redtail Hawks

One lone Ring-neck Duck

Tree Sparrows

of course all the usual - starlings etc.

Killdeer was a bit more of a challenge. I had not been there since the road has been closed. It is not as user friendly as before. We did quite a bit of back tracking. If you plan to go, think about where all you want to go before you get there and work east to west or west to east because you have to go either the north or south end of the refuge to find a cross street.

We did find quite a few eagle here also. More Northern Harriers, two Rough-legged Hawks, Redheaded Woodpeckers, Meadowlark, Lesser Scaup, lots of Horned Lark. Alas no owls, but lots of people in the pine grove.

We did meet up with a couple from England who were in search of Ohio's winter owls. When we left them they had not seen a one - disappointing.

Overall a good day, great group of people

Happy Birding

Cris Barnett

Naturalist

Greene County Parks
