Stunning ice crystal vistas, accentuated by gliding raptors made for a truly memorable trip to the Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area and surrounding vicinity today. My hopes for a shrike were not fulfilled, but I was not disappointed.

Today's totals were:
    Bald Eagle - 4
Northern Harrier - 3 (all female)
    Red-shouldered Hawk - 7
    Red Tail Hawk - 28
    Rough-legged Hawk - 3
    American Kestrel - 2
    Cooper's Hawk - 1
    Turkey - 37
    Eastern Bluebird - 31
The area can be found in the Delorme map on pages 42-43 and is centered in A5.
There is a rectangle formed by N/S routes 45 & 46 and E/W routes 87 & 88.
It is important to note that this area is not available for parking or walking. It is for hunting, fishing and trapping. My personal opinion aside, if you are careful and attentive you can view everything from your vehicle.
Since the blanket of heavy snow was laid down the raptors are wide spread and frequently seen out hunting. This includes the eagles. I have witnessed eagles coursing like harriers many times recently.
The "Roughies" seem to stay close to the large field surrounded by North Park Rd, Mahan Denman Rd and Hoagland Blackstub Rd. Primarily seen from Hoagland Blackstub westward to the center area of the field. I have not yet seen them anywhere else.
As the fields thaw, the show should continue to entertain. It's definitely worth a visit before spring migration begins.
There are many other surrounding areas to check out including the Grand River Wildlife Area to the west.
If anyone would like any other details, feel free to contact me off list. I'm happy to share.
Good Luck,
Andrew Morrison
