Subject: Raptorious Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area

Made my weekly trip to Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area, in Trumble County Saturday.
The wind was sharp, but the raptors seemed to love it. Most were out hunting.
In all I found:
Bald Eagle 4 (3 adults, 1 juvy - all viewed hunting like Harriers along the ground)
Rough-legged Hawk 5 (1 possible dark morph)
Red Tail Hawk 7
Northern Harrier 5 (4 female, 1 male)
American Kestral 2
Red-shouldered Hawk 1
Turkey 30+ (they burst into flight and I was trying not to wreck)
Great Blue Heron 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker 1

My appologies, as I do not own a Delorme map, but here is a link to the area map. http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/wildlife/pdf/pub149.pdf

The
raptors can be found anywhere on any given day, but the highest
concentration is usually in the large field bordered by North Park
Road, Mahan-Denman Rd. and Hoagland-Backstub Rd.

I did not locate the Northern Shrike that has (or had) been there for over a month.
For
those interested, it (was) frequenting the area on the west side of
Hoagland-Backstub Rd between the two parking areas near Mahan-Denman
Rd. Specifically, between parking area 13 and the woods just south of
it.

Generally speaking, the large square formed by Routes 45,
87, 88 and Moquito Lake is "chakablok" with wintering and resident
raptors.

Good birding
