Dear Michele and all--
First of all, thanks for the well-written descriptions of remarkable
bird behaviors you've been lucky enough to witness and sharp enough to
recognize as worthy of mention. You say "My apologies if some of the
above belonged on the forum," and I can't repress a comment on that.
After all the to-do of the founding of the OOS forums, perhaps more
people need reminding of the stated purposes of this listserve
ohio-birds (read by many via digests and archives on the Web rather than
as e-mail, by the way). Here they are:

share information about bird sightings in Ohio

review the most recent bird sighting reports and rare bird alerts
from across the state

learn (and ask) about places to look for birds in Ohio

discuss and debate the occurrence, distribution, identification,
and ecology of Ohio birds

Additionally, the guidelines provide that "The purpose of this mailing
list is to discuss wild Ohio birds. However, it is NOT limited to
reports of rarities, or even to sightings of birds in Ohio. Discussions
of birding sites in Ohio, birding events in or near Ohio, and anything
else that relates to wild Ohio birds are all appropriate topics."
Everything you posted is perfectly appropriate to this venue, and the
observations of aggression between woodpeckers and possible food caching
by a kestrel in particular were of special interest. Thanks for sharing
them.
