This evening (Thursday March 1, 7 pm, 112 PSN) Dennis Whigham, Senior
Scientist at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, will
lecture on "Linking land-use to ecological conditions in Chesapeake
Bay: evidence for the pervasive impacts of watershed
development." This is the annual Roger E. Wilson Lecture in Ecology
hosted by the Botany Department. Dr. Whigham is a plant ecologist
with extensive research experience in wetland and forest
ecology. The public is invited to this Lecture, which will describe
a multi-disciplinary study of how land-use and development has
affected the water quality and fisheries of the Chesapeake Bay, and
how wetland restoration can be used to enhance biodiversity and
improve water quality. A reception will follow the Lecture.

Dr. Whigham will also give the Botany Department seminar on Friday,
March 2, in 218 PSN, entitled, "Interactions between terrestrial
orchids and mycorrhizal fungi: complexities at varying
scales." Another reception will be held at the home of David
Gorchov and Vivian Negron, 101 Peabody Drive, 7-9 pm Fri.March 2
