This continues to be, as Bob Royce reported, a good spot for healthy numbers
of waterfowl. I believe that these numbers are beginning to decline a bit,
however. Most of the lower portion of the lake was still ice-covered today,
except one small bay across from the beach. Most of the action was in the
upper part of the lake, best visible from an access area off SR 207, south
of the marina. I was not able to visit the Egypt Pike wetlands Bob mentioned
in the two hours I was able to spend this morning. On the reservoir, there
were (very rough estimates on numbers):

Mallard - several thousand

Am. Wigeon - similar #s

N. Pintail - ~500

Green-winged Teal - 50-100+

Gadwall - <10 noted

Am. Black Duck - 50-100

Ring-necked Duck - 500-1000

Redhead - app.500

Lesser Scaup - app. 500 (no Greaters noted)

Canvasback - <10

Bufflehead - 2-4

Hooded Merganser - 100-300

Red-breasted Merganser - 100-200

Common Merganser - a few

Common Goldeneye - 4

Ruddy Duck - 5-10

Pied-billed Grebe - 2

Horned Grebe - 10-20 (beginning to molt - I did double-takes on a few)

Canada Goose 300-500

Tundra Swan - 26 (flew in as I was leaving)

Ring-billed Gull - ~500

Happy Birding!

Eric Reiner - Ashville, Ohio
