Greetings-------nothing mind-blowing, but enjoyable species in the Lowellville area the last few days include: tundra swans, n. pintails, wood ducks, ring-necked duck, ring-necked pheasant, belted kingfisher, yellow-bellied sapsucker, pileated woodpecker, red-shouldered hawks, wild turkey, e. phoebes, brown creeper, e. bluebirds, n. mockingbirds, e. towhees, fox sparrows, Am. tree sparrows, numerous song sparrows, and brown-headed cowbirds (whoopee). Turkey vultures and killdeers remain quite scarce locally (lucky for them). Carolina wrens are NOT being heard--not a good sign. Did they survive the winter elsewhere in northern Ohio? Woodcocks, snipes, tree swallows, and meadowlarks have not yet arrived here. Open water at Pine L. and Evans L. ( where Yellow Creek enters and exits) has been productive lately, producing horned grebe, pintails, lesser scaups, coots, etc. Lastly, the polluted Mahoning River (when not at flood stage as it is now) has attracted some
waterfowl recently, including redheads. It reminds me alot of the early comeback days of the lower Cuyahoga River. Thumbs up to everybody checking their "local patches" these days, many good birds appear away from popular "hotspots".......later, Craig
