Canton Audubon took their "Mystery" Field Trip yesterday, destination
western Lake Erie.

At Metzger Marsh:

Canada Geese
Tundra Swans--couple of nice sized flocks
NO puddle ducks!
Canvasbacks--a few thousand--many too far away to get anywhere close to a
decent estimate
Redheads--many
Ring-necked Ducks--many
Lesser Scaup--a lot but less than ring-necks
Buflehead--a lot
Hooded Merganser--a lot
Pied-billed Grebe--a few
Horned Grebe--several
American Coot--a lot
On the auto tour:

All of the above plus
Trumpter Swans--2 pair (1 pair with neck bands & 1 pair VERY close to the
road. There were probably more but we were hard put to tell them from the very
large numbers of Tundras.
Mute Swans--2 or 3, I forget exactly
Gadwalls--2 flocks of about 1/2 doz.
American wigeons--a few
American Black Ducks--2
Northern Shovelers--about 50, in the pond at the 1st right turn
Green-winged teals--3, 1st pond
Common Goldeneye--1 female, 1st pond
Common Mergansers--about 1/2 doz.
Red-breasted Mergansers--8, flyover at 1st pond
Ruddy Ducks--6--last pond
Great-blue Herons--3 or 4

Highlights of "other" birds seen during the day included 7 or 8 Bald Eagles,
2 Northern Harriers, 2 or 3 Red-tailed Hawk, 1 accipiter, probably a
Sharp-shinned, 2 or 3 Kestrels, several Killdeer and a few Horned Larks, which was a
life bird for at least 1 member of the group. Hope I didn't forget anything.

A good trip with good friends.
