The ice on the main lake at Eastwood metropark (DeLorme p 65 B7) melted last week, and I stopped
by the past two evenings on my way home from work.

Monday was cold, drizzling, and gray. Most notable were the large flocks of tree swallows, the first
I've seen this year. Coots and mallards were easy to find, as were robins, red-winged blackbirds,
and morning doves. Common and hooded mergansers, ring-billed gulls, and greater scaup were a
good distance from shore. Rounding out my list were great blue heron and belted kingfisher.

Tuesday the weather was blue sky beautiful, and the bipedal primates were more abundant.
Unfortunately, the birding was not nearly as good. There seemed to be five times as many tree
swallows as the day before, and a killdeer graced the lakeshore. The raft of ducks was too far
offshore and the water was too choppy to do definitive IDs even with 60X and good light, but I think
I saw redheads and canvasbacks. The remaining birds fell into the category of usual suspects: song
sparrow, mallard, red-winged blackbird, robin, mourning dove, Canada goose, coot.
