I tried to post this once but it didn't seem to get through. I apologize if
you get this twice.

I birded the Ohio River today in southeastern Jefferson County and
northeastern Belmont County Ohio. The following list is in no particular
order and all birds were seen either at Pike Island Lock and Dam (PI) in
Yorkville or near the Rayland Marina (RM).

Canada Goose – many (RM)
Common Goldeneye – 1 male, 4 female (RM)
Ring-necked Duck – 4 male, 2 female (RM)
Redhead – 2 male
Horned Grebe – 2 (RM), 2 (PI)
Pied-billed Grebe – 1 (RM)
Hooded Merganser – 1 male, 1 female (RM)
Gadwall – 1 male, 1 female (RM)
Mallard – 2 male (RM), 3 male 3 female (PI)
Canvasback – around 50, mix of males and females (PI)
Bufflehead – 20 male-female mix (PI)
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER – 1 female (PI)
SURF SCOTER – 1 female (PI)
Ring-billed Gull – many (Both locations)
Great Blue Heron – 2 (RM), 1 (PI)

I have now seen all three species of scoters on the Ohio River with the
addition of today’s Surf Scoter. During the winter of 1994 I saw a pair of
Black Scoters near the Rayland Marina. In late winter of 2002 I saw my
first White-winged Scoter at Pike Island. Today I got the hat trick with
the Surf Scoter.

I also spotted an adult Bald Eagle today along Rt. 7 in Belmont County. I
suspect that they are nesting somewhere on the hillside over the river. I’m
going to head out tomorrow morning and try to find their nest.

Good times.

Scott Albaugh
