In the past week a pair of Cooper's Hawks have been constructing a
nest in a wooded area (no homeowner development) that is a
combination of backyards from two residential streets in Akron near
King School, Memorial Parkway and Merriman Road. A tributary stream
of the Cuyahoga drains these backyards and forms a woodland corridor
as it continues to the Cuyahoga (approximately a half of a mile from
this site). The stream flows into the Cuyahoga just downstream of the
confluence of the Little Cuyahoga and Cuyahoga on the west side of
the river opposite the southernmost part of the golf course.

The female is frequently vocalizing as the pair fly back and forth to
the nest. Female has been observed with food in the general area of
the nest.

I would greatly appreciate someone in the West Akron area assisting
me in the confirmation of my identification, although the
vocalizations make it much easier than visual cues. I had been
assuming a flicker before I took a good look after I noticed a hawk
cruising around for the first few days.

Please email me off list.

Thanks,
Jan
