Hi all,

I lead the Kirtland Bird Club around Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area today. The weather was with us most of the time with a few occasional sprinkles. We started off at the main parking lot on Hoagland Blackstub Rd. where we had a Northern Harrier, Common Loon (flyover), and an Osprey picking up marsh grass and carrying it to its nesting platform. Waterfowl around MCWA included: Buffleheads, Hooded Mergansers, Wood Ducks, Northern Shovelers, American Wigeon, Gadwall, Ring-necked Ducks, Canvasback, Ruddy Ducks, and a Green-winged Teal. Other birds included: Sandhill Crane (flyover), Swamp Sparrows, and many Rusty Blackbirds.

From the Mosquito Lake causeway (Rt. 88) we had American Coots, Horned Grebes, Buffleheads, 3 Double-crested Cormorants, Tree Swallows, and over a hundred Red-breasted Mergansers. A week ago there were hundreds of ducks but now there are hundreds of fishermen.

Afterwards we drove over to Norton Lane, part of Grand River Wildlife Area. Around the impoundments we had Ring-necked Ducks, Pied-billed Grebe, Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shovelers, American Wigeon, Hooded Mergansers, 2 Mute Swans, and up to a half a dozen Wilson’s Snipe.
