I drove to Holmes County to see the Harris' Sparrow this afternoon. The bird was seen next to a compost pile that was uphill from a small creek next to the house. I never would have seen it if it hadn't been for the efforts of the five Amish boys who were constantly scanning the hillside. They had all seen the bird many times before. One said that he had seen it over one hundred times. Still they stood out in the snow, working the hillside, until one of them had it in his scope. As soon as they spotted the bird, they made sure that I was the first to look through their scope. They were every bit as excited as I was, and that really made the trip special. In addition to the Harris' Sparrow, I also saw my first Eastern Meadowlark of the year. I birded for about forty minutes until my hands froze and then the boys and I headed back to the farmhouse where they live. Before I said goodbye, I handed them copies of some of the postings that I have seen from birders who
have been to their place. They were thrilled to read them since some of the postings mentioned them by name. Just as I was about to leave two more cars of birders pulled up. The boys ran over to the cars and started talking to the birders. They had to have been nearly frozen from the cold, but I could see them heading back towards the bird with the birders in tow, as I drove away from their farm. Dale
