A buddy of mine had suggested he may have seen a Shrike at Mohawk dam a
few weeks ago and I went searching for it early this morning. Little did
I know but Mohawk was closed due to flooding of the Walhonding River. Not
knowing what to due, I decided to try Woodbury Wildlife Area (PDF on
ODNR's webpage). This was a touch of fate. I viewed a single Northern
Shrike at about 9 a.m. this morning on TR-403 which comes directly off
541. The shrike was in a single tall tree, which overlooked a broad
expanse of grassland, shrub, and thickets of multiflora rose. This was a
life bird for me, and as I grew up in Texas I was used to seeing
Loggerhead. This bird was slightly larger, whiter in nature, and had the
pale patch on the lower mandible.
I also saw quite a few raptors today, being a pair of Red-shouldered
Hawks, a single Juvi. Red-tailed, a female Harrier, and a single Cooper's
off TR-65. I will be coming back here during migration as there is large
expanses of grassland and small wetlands.
Good Birdin'
