Taking advantage of today's unexpectedly gorgeous and warm weather, I took a
quick ride to Edgewater Park and Whiskey Island/Wendy Park to see what could
be seen.

Red-Breasted Mergansers are still around in large numbers. I had probably
about 80 of them from the upper parking lot at the west end of Edgewater,
along with a couple of Bufflehead and a pair of Common Goldeneye. The usual
gulls were present, and plenty of Double Crested Cormorants were moving
through. I also got my first Caspian Tern of the year -- it flew by twice.
Such an elegant bird!

At Whiskey Island in the marina and nearby were about 10 American Coots.
Within the breakwall there were probably another 130 RB mergansers when I
arrived around 2:30. By the time I left about 45 minutes later there were
far fewer. There was also a small number of Lesser Scaup about. In the water
and on the breakwall cormorant numbers must have exceeded 1000! Some
Bonaparte's Gulls were mixed in the usual supsects.

Passerines were in short supply. Nothing notable except three Northern
Mockingbirds, a Ruby-Crowned Kinglet and a handful of Barn Swallows -- it's
nice to see them back. In a few weeks, the air above the park will be
teeming with them. I also scared up quite a few Killdeer, who probably
subsequently scared off anything else I might have seen.

When I was done there, I headed over to the Key Bank wetland (1-480 and
Tiedemann), but discovered that the water level was too high. No mudflat
yet, but warmer, drier days promise that will change.

Finally, I had a Dark-Eyed Junco in my back yard about 15 minutes ago. I
hadn't seen any for a couple weeks, and now they're scattered all around the
neighborhood.
