Some friends of mine from out of state are considering an expedition to
look for shorebirds in Ohio, and asked for advice. My impression is
we're seeing occasionally good numbers of golden-plovers and pectoral
sandpipers in fields in the western counties, decent numbers of snipes
and killdeers in appropriate habitat, modest numbers of both yellowlegs
and solitary sandpipers, and only a few spotties or dunlins or peeps
yet. More sought-after species of the season, like upland sandpipers,
other plovers, dowitchers, or godwits have not been reliably reported at
all to my recollection.
They are particularly interested in spots like Medusa Marsh and
Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area. Can anyone inform the list as to whether
either of these spots now has habitats inviting to migrant shorebirds?
I'm going to advise them to wait a week for more birds to arrive, but it
would be good to offer suggestions about where the habitat is, and I
told them to watch ohio-birds for some guidance. They are aware that
flooded agricultural fields can be good for a while in spring, and that
this depends entirely on rainfall.
Thanks,
Bill Whan
