This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for April 27, 2007.
Compiler: Paul Gardner. Email: [log in to unmask]

This is a summary of noteworthy birds reported from Ohio in
the previous week or so. Reports have been gleaned by the
compiler from various internet sources, particularly Ohio-
Birds, The Ohio Birding Forum, the RareBird.org forums,
Cincinnati Bird Sightings Log, Southwestern Ohio (Dayton)
Rare Bird Alert, and from some individual observers who
kindly share their knowledge. Questions, comments, complaints
and additional noteworthy sightings not posted to one of the
above may be sent to the compiler.

Review List Species. (Review list species are sufficiently
rare that details of any sighting can help increase our
understanding of Ohio's bird life. Suggestions and guidelines
for submitting documentation of review list birds can be
found at the OOS website (www.ohiobirds.org).

ROSS'S GOOSE: A second-hand report had the Holmes County bird
still present as of the 20th. Bruce Glick's directions:
DeLorme, page 51, D-4. From Millersburg, (Holmes County),
take Rts 62/39 east toward Berlin. Before getting to Berlin,
turn right (south) on Rt 557 towards the town of Charm. After
several miles and just before the Guggisberg Cheese House and
restaurant, look for the bird with Canada Geese near a small
pond on the right side of the road.

TRICOLORED HERON: Andy Bess and Frank Flick found this rare
visitor at Acton Lake, Hueston Woods SP, Preble county on the
21st while searching for the stilt. No news since the 21st.

BLACK-NECKED STILT: Found at Acton Lake, Hueston Woods SP,
Preble county on the 18th by Miami University students.
Numerous observers saw the bird through the 21st. No news
since then.

GLOSSY IBIS: In a flock of 10 dark ibises along the causeway
to Metzger Marsh WA on the 26th, Greg Links assigned six to
this species.

WHITE-FACED IBIS: Greg Links assigned one of the above-
mentioned 10 dark ibises to this species, with up to four
birds possibly so. Earlier on the 26th, Bruce Bowman reported
four of this species in the same location.

SWAINSON'S HAWK: Levi Hochstetler, Ed Schlabach and others
observed two while doing a hawk watch at Conneaut on the
23rd. One bird landed on the mudflats.

SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER: Larry Richardson (fide Jim
McCormac) saw one flying westward along the lake at
Huntington Reservation Park in Cuyahoga County on the 23rd.

EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE: Larry Gara reports his wife observed
one briefly in their backyard in Wilmington on the 20th.

Weekly Highlights: Spring-like weather seems to have
compelled the birds northward and the birders outside. As a
result numerous first-of-the-season sightings were reported.
Species reported this week included 24 warblers plus a
hybrid, five vireos, four thrushes, two orioles and numerous
other neotropical migrants. Seek and ye shall find.

EURASIAN WIGEON: Roger Troutman reported one along Clark Rd.
east of Shreve in the Killbuck Marsh WA region on the 22nd.

WHITE-WINGED SCOTER: Seen by Tom Kemp at New London
Reservoir, Huron County on the 22nd.

LONG-TAILED DUCK: Gregory Bennett found a drake still
lingering at Springfield Lake, Summit County, on the 21st.

EARED GREBE: Seen by Tom Kemp at New London Reservoir, Huron
County on the 22nd.

AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN: Still at Buck Creek SP, Clark County,
as of the 21st according to Rick Asamoto.

LITTLE BLUE HERON: Lara Gara spotted the Spring Valley WA
bird on the 22nd. Kenn Kaufman reported that one remained
along the causeway at Magee Marsh on the 23rd, and Jon
Nicodemus reported one from Miami Whitewater Lake, Hamilton
Co., on the 25th.

CATTLE EGRET: Lois and Vic Harder reported one from a flooded
field at the corner of State Route 2 and Benton-Carroll Road,
Ottawa County, on the 26th. Andreas Kanon reported one the
same day near the visitor center at Crane Creek.

GOLDEN EAGLE: Tom Kemp observed an immature bird over Funk
Bottoms on the 21st. Roger Troutman may have had the same
bird on the 22nd.

WILLET: On the 26th along the causeway at Crane Creek SP,
Darlene Friedman saw a flock of 26, an extraordinary number
for northwest Ohio. Greg Links reported them from Metsger
Marsh WA on the same day.

UPLAND SANDPIPER: Brain Zweibel photographed an early migrant
on the 24th at Howard Rd in eastern Lucas County, not far
from their traditional location at Krause Road.

HYBRID WARBLER: Rick Nirschl reports the hybrid warbler,
putatively Northern Parula X Cerulean Warbler, has returned
for a fifth year to Wildwood Preserve, 5100 W. Central
Avenue, Toledo. The bird is found behind the Manor House.

LARK SPARROW: Jeremy Ross reports they've returned to the
"sparrow field" on the west side of Girdham Road north of
Reed Road at Oak Openings Preserve, Lucas County.

Ann Kubicki from Cleveland Metroparks Ohio & Erie Canal
Reservation (CanalWay) on the 22nd.
