Just got a call from Troy Shively, who's traveling between Killdeer
Plains and Big Island. Traveling south on Upper Sandusky-Prospect Rd (De
Lorme 47: C6-7) in fields at the intersection with E-W Irwin Shoots Rd
he found in excess of 1000 American golden-plovers, most in beautiful
breeding plumage, and there may be many more nearby. He found another
hundred upon reaching SR 95 near Big Island.
In recent years, this general area has been the state's best for
reports of early-season grasslands shorebirds like golden-plovers and
pectoral sandpipers, with numbers as high as 5000 of each. These birds
are appearing on a slightly later schedule than usual.
