A field trip with 16 participants from Cleveland Metroparks toured a
few Greater Cleveland area birding locales today. Weather was
overcast with off and on mist/light rain, winds westerly, shifting SW
to W, clearing in mid-late afternoon. Locations: Headlands Beach
State Park & State Nature Preserve, and Mentor Marsh, Lake Co;
Chagrin River Park, Lake Co.; Dike 14/Gordon Park area, Cuyahoga Co.
lakefront; Sandy Ridge Reservation, Lorain Co.

Highlights of at least 93 species included:

Gadwall - several at Mentor Marsh and Sandy Ridge
Blue-winged Teal - Mentor Marsh and Sandy Ridge
Northern Shoveler - Sandy Ridge
Green-winged Teal - Sandy Ridge
Lesser Scaup - Headlands Beach
Bufflehead - Headlands Beach
Red-breasted Merganser - Dike 14/Gordon Park and Headlands
Ruddy Duck - groups at Headlands Beach and Sandy Ridge
Great Egret - Sandy Ridge
Green Heron - 3 -4
Osprey - Mentor Marsh
Bald Eagle - Sandy Ridge
MERLIN - Dike 14, a brown-backed bird made the swallows nervous
SORA - Sandy Ridge
SANDHILL CRANE - The resident pair at Sandy Ridge put on a show, and
called in a third bird that was soaring high over the wetlands; this
third individual eventurally descended and landed there
Greater Yellowlegs - a few
Lesser Yellowlegs - two migrating flocks at Dike 14 and more at Sandy
Ridge - 25+
Solitary Sandpiper - 3
Spotted Sandpiper - 3
WHIP-POOR-WILL - thanks to Suzanne Wagner who found this gray bird
roosting at Headlands
Warbling Vireo - Headlands
Kinglets and Gnatcatchers common - most kinglets were Ruby-crowned
Hermit Thrush - several
Yellow Warbler - Sandy Ridge
PINE WARBLER - Gordon Park
PRAIRIE WARBLER - Headlands Beach
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER - singing male at Sandy Ridge
Northern Waterthrush - a few, various locales
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - one male at Sandy Ridge
