Hello Ohio Birders,

Sorry to miss the Columbus Avid Birders' Shawnee trip but I had to "work" servicing bug traps.  I thought I'd add my piece to the migration picture.  Near Ash Cave and/or near Buena Vista (Hocking Co.) yesterday: osprey, solitary sandpiper, sapsucker, acadian flycatcher, white-eyed, yellow-throated, blue headed vireos, hermit & wood thrushes, 13 warblers (nashville, parula, yellow, black-throated green, yellow-rumped, yellow-throated, pine, cerulean, black-and-white, ovenbird, La. waterthrush, yellowthroat, hooded), scarlet tanager, rose-breasted grosbeak, indigo bunting.  

The many reports from this weekend make a nice snapshot of how the migration is proceeding.  The birds seem to be slightly behind their "average" schedule, as are the insects.  I'll be interested to see whether plants recover enough from the earlier freeze to provide foliage for those all-important little caterpillars which in turn provide food for many of the May migrants.  Tent caterpillars are my "barometer" and they seem to be doing ok, about half-grown with plenty to eat despite the freeze.
