I went to Spring Valley after work today. I saw the Little Blue Heron
that was originally reported a week or two ago. It was in the area where
the pond and marsh meet, near several wood duck houses. You had to be on
the west bank to see it. The bird had a bluish bill with a darker tip to
it. The wings, back, belly, chest and tail were a slaty blue color. The
legs were similar in color. The head and neck had some purple to it.
There were no plumes on this bird yet. The legs were also slaty colored.

Later, on the boardwalk I saw a Virginia Rail fly onto the boardwalk
only about 20 feet from me. I also heard a second Virginia in the
cattails. While I was trying to get a second look at the rails I heard
two Sandhill Cranes "talking" to each other. They were located in the
same area it is believed they tried to nest in last year.

At 8:30 I heard a Sora, my first of season.

42 species in all. The only warbler were several Yellow-rumps.

Good Birding
