Today, I took off at 5:30 AM for the Black Swamp Bird Observatory for what
I assumed was the advertised 8AM Bird Walk. I was pleasantly suprised
(actually overjoyed) when I found we were going to the Navarre Marsh Bird
Banding site. Thanks to Julie and Rusty? for a wonderful and educational
morning. We got a great lecture on the history of the site and the
Marsh's importance in passerine migration as well as great conversation on
the waves of bird migration thru the Lake Erie Shore, weather effects on
bird migration, and a hostof other migration topics. Then up close and
personal thru the representative warblers of the day. Also had a chance
to see Wood, Grey cheeked, Swainsons and Veery thrushes all at the same
time. Also Lincolns and swamp sparrows side by side and 3 feet away. One
of the many Highlights was a virginia rail that had been captured in
the "Rail" trap.
This was my first time at the BSBO and Mcgee Marsh and it was a real
treat. The birds seen have already been nicely detailed in previous posts.
I would encourage all to visit the BSBO web site and become a member as I
will after this is posted. They also have a new "Adopt a Mist Net"
program in support of their ongoing banding project as the deer keep
running thru the nets. (We deer hunters ARE good for something after all).
I don't know when they will offer tours of the banding site again but I am
sure you may call the contact number on the website.

Thanks again BSBO Good birding, Phillip North
