An afternoon walk yesterday at the Denison Biological Reserve in Granville provided my first scarlet tanager of the year, a male singing and calling from the treetops along the east edge of the Swallow Trail.  There were plenty of swallows (mostly tree; at least two barn), and the air was filled with the songs of goldfinches, blue-winged warblers, white-eyed vireos, and towhees.  Saw just one ruby-throated hummingbird in some honeysuckle. A barred owl called four times over about 5 minutes, but I did not locate the bird.  A yellow-throated vireo was singing near the bridge on the Hyacinth Trail, perhaps the same bird I watched there about this time last year.  

When I returned home to Pataskala, my non-birding husband was excited about a "fantastic bird" he'd seen on our feeders - and then described a male rose-breasted grosbeak.  He showed me pictures had taken out the kitchen window of the bird gracing our platform feeder.  We generally get 2 to 4 grosbeaks this time of year, but someone a couple of miles from here often reports huge numbers - 60 grosbeaks that stay for weeks.  I think I'll walk past their house today to see if their flock has returned.
