A person in our Audubon chapter has sent the following e-mail to us and we're stumped on the ID.
Maybe someone out there can help:
I received the following emails recently from Liz Murphy about an unusual bird at her feeder. I know
it's not much to go on, but do you have any hypothesis as to what it might be?
May 24: Do you know where I could find information about an usual bird at my feeder? Can't
locate it in Peterson's guide. Black, size of a small crow or medium woodpecker, with a wide white
band on the tail...and when it bows its head, you can see white around it's neck...but it's not like a
white band - only truly visible when it bowed it's head to the feeder.
June 12: Have seen it once more - with witnesses (so you don't think I'm crazy). "regular" bill - not
like a Grosbeak. Totally black except for the odd white THIN collar that only shows when he bends
his neck and the thick white stripe down the tail - takes up at least 1/2 the tail, down the middle.
About the size of a grackel.
This is in the Akron area.
Thanks for any comments.
Clyde
