Thanks for all of the suggestions for I.D. of my mystery night caller. The consensus seems to be some sort of juvenile owl and, judging from the recordings I found online, the calls are pretty close -- I never realized owls made so many different sounds! This little guy must have an insatiable appetite, calling every night continuously for hours!  I am going to try to hike up to the area and look around. Thanks again.
