Hello everyone,

The use of bird specimens as educational tools is very interesting and I
thought it would make a great topic for a presentation for the Black Swamp Bird
Observatory's Lunch Lecture Series. I've been hearing so much about the work
that Dr. Andy Jones is doing at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and
thinking that as much as I love living just 10 minutes from Ottawa National
WIldlife Refuge and Magee Marsh, it would be so cool to take a class from Dr.
Jones on how to prepare a bird study skin......if only I lived closer to
Cleveland.

To console myself, I invited Dr. Jones to join our Lunch Lecture Series,
and on June 16th he will present
"Dead Birds Tell Many Tales". Birds are facing increasing perils.
Communication towers, wind turbines, power lines, and automobiles all are posing
increasing threats to birds. It's always a sad moment when we discover a bird
that didn't survive the gauntlet, but Dr. Jones will share with us some ways
that, when preserved properly, these "lost" birds can serve a very useful
purpose. He will also discuss how today's methods in molecular biology are
revolutionizing the way we study birds. With these new techniques, museum specimens
can tell us a great deal about migratory pathways, genetic changes through
time, and surprising details about bird colors. At the Museum, Dr. Jones is
using molecular methods to answer an array of questions. He'll detail his own
research into taxonomy and biogeography of birds from Southeast Asia and South
America.

BSBO Lunch Lectures take place at the Black Swamp Bird Observatory Nature
Center at 13551 West State Route 2, Oak Harbor, Ohio, located just inside the
entrance to Crane Creek State Park. We begin at 12:30 with a light lunch and
the program is from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. If you'd like to attend, please call the
BSBO office at (419) 898-4070 to reserve a meal and a seat. Cost is $7.00
per BSBO member and $10.00 per nonmember.

Please visit BSBO online at: _www.bsbobird.org_ (http://www.bsbobird.org)
for all the latest Observatory bird banding results and updates on programs and
events.

Thank you,
